In recent years, online learning has bridged the gap, moving steadily from the educational fringes to the very heart center of the academic world. And nothing has done more to increase interest in online courses than the recent Covid-19 pandemic when “remote learning” became a keyword for survival.

Why should you take an online course?

Regardless of where you are in your professional life, an online course can seriously increase your chances of getting a job. Many entrepreneurs are opting for courses adjacent or in some way related to their field of work, in order to deepen their experience and become better at what they do (thus increasing their own employability).

But online courses can also take you into a whole new direction, professional or personal, which you’ve been meaning to explore for a long time.

So how do you choose the right course for you?

In order to figure out the right course for you, you’ll need to ask yourself a few basic questions.

1. Why are you doing this?

Obviously, whether you’re doing this for your CV or for personal pleasure will make a huge difference in what course you choose. Many online courses offer certificates and even degrees which you can then use to look for better work. However, if you’re only doing a course for personal reasons, then such accreditation is not really your main goal. Figure out your goals before you begin researching the online course market.

2. What is most likely to impress my future employers?

If you’re looking to grow professionally from an online course, then you have to ask yourself what is likely to most stand out to your future employers. The area you live in is likely to play an important part. For example, if you work in London, then a certification from a university in New Mexico is less likely to carry swaying power than one from a London university.

3. What am I getting?

One of the main points of attraction in an online course is interaction, which is also true for in-person classes, incidentally. Truth be told, you are less likely to pick up valuable information that will stick with you from a lecture than from an interactive learning program. That’s just how we work, and when we feel directly involved in the class, we’re automatically paying more attention.
So in your search for the ideal online course, make sure you look for one that is interactive and engaging, not just something with stellar backing, for example. You’re likely to learn less from that, and thus waste your time!

4. Is it really worth it?

With any online course, you’re wont to spend a serious amount of time (and potentially money), so you want to be sure it’s worth it before you enroll. If you plan on using this course professionally, make sure that the amount of time/money you’re spending on it is proportional to the extra earning or employability it will get you.

Do some research on how that specific accreditation can boost your career, because if it’s something that will provide little to no boost, then you’re better off without it.

5. Is the teacher engaging?

Most online courses offer you a sneak peek into the course material, which is after all, only fair. Take advantage of that before enrolling in the entire course. A good first impression of the teacher is paramount. What if you enrolled only to find that the teacher strikes you as tedious and you can’t focus on what he’s saying for the life of you.

Also, make sure you read the entire course description thoroughly to get a better idea of what this course is offering.

6. What are others saying about it?

Sure, a good course description is nice, but what truly matters here is what ex-students have to say about it, specifically about how the accreditation helped advance their career (if that’s what you’re looking for).
Before enrolling in anything, do some research and see what independent learners are saying about it - is it worth it? Is the course material up to date and engaging? And most importantly, can you use it to further your career?

When chosen carefully, a good online course can do wonders for your professional standing, and for growing your own personal set of skills. So choose wisely!
